“Wolpe also taught Greenbaum the simultaneous use of a musical element in the foreground, middleground and background.  Greenbaum’s interpretation of this idea can again be heard in his treatment of melody.  An example is the second movement of Castelnau, in which the viola melody appears on all levels of the texture.  It is like a melody in a hall of mirrors, its elements reflected back at it through the other instruments in various guises.  Of these guises, perhaps the most conspicuous is harmony.  Greenbaum’s melodies are both the genesis and the product of his harmonic writing.  His taste for primarily diatonic intervals lend his harmonies a shimmering, ambient sonority.”
