Mari Kimura will give solo recital program including American and European contemporary music for the violin, and her own compositions for the violin, using the "revolutionary" (The New York Times) bowing technique, "Subharmonics." She will also present works using interactive computer with motion sensor extracting musical expression from the violin bow: the "Augmented Violin" system developed at IRCAM in Paris.
The "Augmented Violin" system, developed by the Real Time Musical Interaction Team at IRCAM in Paris, extracts and analyzes via bowing motion, human musical expression. The motion sensor of "Augmented Violin" system is called Mini-MO (Modular Musical Objects), which contains 3D accelerometer and 2-axis gyroscope. The sensor is very small, not intrusive for the fast-moving bow arm, and attached into a custom-made glove on violinist's right hand. Kimura incorporates the data taken from the "Augmented Violin System" into the interactive computer music program MaxMSP, creating expressive collaboration between human and machine. Kimura will also present her works, which include interacting with graphics created by Japanese movie director, Tomoyuki Kato.
